The Surgery, Athenry is very active within the Athenry locality in supporting events that support the health and wellbeing of all people within the community. Our team is committed to acting as a resource and support for our patients and local community not just from a medical perspective but also from an overall health perspective and we have been involved in a range of projects since we opened our new facility. Here is a selection of events that we have supported in the past.
Fit4Life

Fit 4 Life is a program for runners, joggers and walkers, to help them get motivated and get stay fit. Athenry AC have run an annual 5k race for the group and The Surgery has been delighted to act as a registration centre and finishing base for the event.
Galway 5K series

The Galway 5K series is a hugely popular series of races that take place every year in April and May. They are designed to get people out exercising and having fun through running or walking. Athenry AC hosts one leg of the series annually and The Surgery has supported the race over the past number of years.
The Fields of Athenry 10K

The fields of Athenry is one of the leading road races in the country and takes place every year on St. Stephens Day with over 1000 participants from all over the country. The Surgery has been involved in sponsorship and support in recent years and are looking forward to supporting it again in 2016.
Exercise and Lifestyle Programme

Moving4Health provides a series of exercise, lifestyle and cardiac rehabilitation programs for people living in Co. Galway and Mayo. This programme aims to address the unique health needs of each individual, to support people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, post cardiac event, as well as those in stroke and cancer recovery or for anyone wishing to reduce their weight and improve their overall health and well-being. They take place in our Primary Care Centre in 6 week blocks on Mondays at 6pm and 7.15pm. They are delivered by Caroline Costello, Cardiac Exercise Specialist (MSc Preventive Cardiology, BACPR and Croí affiliated). All exercises are designed specifically to help individuals achieve health and wellness, no matter what age or level of fitness ability.
CAATCH focusing on teenage mental health

We were delighted to host a series of talks aimed at Suicide prevention in younger people. CAATCH (Corofin, Athenry, Abbeyknockmoy & Turloughmore Community Health) is a regional voluntary initiative which addresses the difficult challenge of suicide and its impact in these local areas. The group aims to raise awareness, provide information, and facilitate training locally with the goal of building community resilience and strength. Downloads: iPhone, Android
Athenry Community First Responder Group

Athenry Community First Responder Group are a National Ambulance Service first response asset. They cover 25sq Km around Athenry Co. Galway, responding to life threatening Cardiac Arrest calls with over 20 fully trained and willing, community based volunteer first responders. A number of training evenings were held in the Athenry Primary Care Centre in early 2016 with further training courses planned for 2017.
The Surgery & Our Schools

We have teamed up with a number of primary schools and pre-schools to introduce some of our younger patients to what’s involved when they visit the centre. Last year Dr David Meehan and Dr Michael McGloin visited some of the local schools to give a series of talks and demonstrations on GP health care. These talks and demonstrations are designed to remove any fears children may harbour about visiting a Doctor. It is hoped this will make their visits a more enjoyable experience both for themselves and their parents.
Future events

Future events that we are delighted to be involved with include:
– Celebration of Age Awareness Week
– Basic Life Support Courses.
